Cisco support status lookup by serial number. Ask Question 1. Many vendors allow you to look at the support status of a device with no information besides a serial number. I wouldn't say it's /never/ correct in IOS but the only way to do this 100% accurately is to physically get the serial number off the box and then enter it in snmp-server chassis-id like Simon has pointed out. You can NEVER trust the information from IOS or RME or anywhere else. I really wanted to make this “10 Ways To Find The Serial Number of Your Cisco Router” but I honestly couldn’t think of two more ways to grab the serial number of a router. I’m certain there are probably a couple more obscure ways to do this, but I haven’t bothered scouring the IOS commands in search of alternative means of determining.
Recently, I was doing a true up of our Cisco SmartNet contract, and had to get the serial numbers from all of the Cisco devices on the network.
